This must have something to do with neuroplasticity
Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset: Which One Are You? - Michael Graham Richard:
"People who hold the Growth Mindset believe that intelligence can be developed, that the brain is like a muscle that can be trained. This leads to the desire to improve."

I agree - it must have to do with neuroplasticity. Either that or we should be stuck with the approaches to life we had in our teens.
I don't think of myself as an old dog (although my beard is graying), but I do insist on learning new tricks.
Hey,
Thanks for the link.
If you are interested in how minds work and neuroscience, two great books (that you might already have read):
Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadster (sp?)
and
On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins
cheers,
Michael G.R.
